Dijon Wine Tours

Dijon Wine Weather by Month

A wine day from Dijon is half in cellars and half among the vines. The cellars do not care about the sky, but the rows, the e-bike and the viewpoints do. Match your Dijon Wine tour to the month, and pack for the half you spend outdoors.

What the weather does to a Dijon wine day

Rain rarely stops your tasting, because the estates pour under a roof and your minivan is closed. What changes is your time outdoors: a walk in the Côte de Nuits vines, a photo stop at the Clos de Vougeot, free time in Beaune.

You feel it most on the bike days. The e-bike day into the Côte de Beaune may switch to a minivan in bad weather, and the operator can decide at the last minute. Its listing asks you to check the forecast before you leave and to dress for it.

Heat matters more than rain. On the hottest days, a vineyard walk at 3 pm is hard work, and on an e-bike day you spend long hours in the sun. In winter, frost and short days are the limit, not the wine.

The figures below are Météo-France's 1991-2020 normals for Dijon-Longvic, a station at 219 m. The Côte starts a short drive south of the city.

May to September is the easy choice. Highs run from 20 °C to nearly 27 °C, frost is gone, and every desk keeps its long hours. September gives you mild days and 191 hours of sun.

Summer is the brightest season, with 257 hours of sun in July. It is also the one with heat: about 18 days a year reach 30 °C, nearly all in June, July and August. Winter is the quiet season, with frost on about half the nights and estates with time to talk. The dates that matter more than the forecast are on when to visit.

Rain, heat and the bike days

Whichever month you pick, rain falls on 8 to 11 days of it, so no month is dry. A light waterproof earns its place in any season. The wettest months are November and May, then October.

On a bike, heat is the harder problem. Neither e-bike day puts water in the fare, so bring a bottle. The e-bike days ride in the morning and break for lunch, which keeps the long climb out of the afternoon. See the rides on dijon bike wine tour.

Best time of day on the Côte

In summer, take the vines in the morning. The shared days leave Dijon between 9 and 9:45 am, so you are in the rows before the heat. After lunch you taste in a cellar.

In winter, you reverse it: your morning in a cellar, then the vines in the warmer hours after noon. For photographs, the low light of late afternoon suits the vines best.
